The project-signing ceremony for the advanced-material industry in Chengdus functional zone was held on August 25th. There were eight enterprises present including US-based JM company and French Air Liquide Group. They signed an investment agreement worth 8.4 billion yuan with the Peoples Government of Xinjin county of Sichuan. Other enterprises such as China National Chemical Corporation all expressed their intention to further cooperate with Chengdu’s advanced-material functional zone.

Located in Xinjin county, Chengdu city’s advanced-material industry functional zone is one of 13 municipal strategic functional zones planned for Chengdu’s transformation into a modern garden city. Its planned area is 33 square kilometers, and 5.67 square kilometers has been completed. It has also become the national high-performance fiber, and new and high technologies industrial bases appointed by Ministry of Science and Technology. The general position of advanced-material functional zone is that it wants to establish itself as an advanced-material industry center with distinguishable characteristics that are internationally known, nationally rated and No. 1 in west China. The industrial position is to prioritize the development of high-performance fibrous and composite materials, rail-transit materials, electronic-information materials, high-polymer materials and new building materials.

At present, the advanced-material functional zone has experienced an industrial build-up effect. More than 70 enterprises (projects) have settled here. Total investment has exceeded 30 billion yuan. The settled projects include ChemChina’s western project, the polysilicon project of Tianwei Sichuan Silicon Co., Ltd., the special fiber base project of BlueStar and the thermoplastic material project of Shanghai Genius Co., Ltd.

Chengdu’s advanced-material industry functional zone achieved an output value of 9 billion yuan in 2010. It is estimated that the functional zone will achieve an output value of more than 30 billion yuan by 2015 and 100 billion yuan by 2020, when it becomes a advanced-material industrial complex and cluster. The advanced-material industry is expected to be the pillar industry of Chengdu by 2030, claiming an important status in the global economy.
